Data Protection & Legislation

The Barts BioResource (BBR), sponsored by Barts Health NHS Trust and operates within its infrastructure, is committed to transparency in how data is handled. As such, BBR complies with all relevant laws and regulations governing the protection, use of personal data and confidentiality. BBR adheres to the following legislations and policies: 

  • UK Policy Framework for Health and Social Care Research (2017)
  • Human Tissue Act (HTA) (2004)
  • UK GDPR 
  • Data Protection Act (2018)
  • Health Research Authority approvals (including REC)
  • Common Law Duty of Confidentiality
  • Declaration of Helsinki (2024)
  • Mental Capacity Act (2005)  

 

Your Rights & Requests

Freedom of Information requests relating to the Barts BioResource are handled by the Barts Health NHS Trust in line with its FOI policies. 

You can submit a request to the Trust by emailing: foi.bartshealth@nhs.net   

Please include your name and a contact address, when making your request. While responses are usually sent by email, including a postal address is recommended in case of delivery issues.

Please note that requests for access to your own health records are not handled under the Freedom of Information Act. These fall under the Data Protection Act and should be made as a Subject Access Request (SAR).

Under the General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR), you have the right to access your personal data and receive information about how it is used. This is known as a Subject Access Request (SAR). SARs relating to data held by the Barts BioResource are managed by Barts Health NHS Trust.
